Know Your Rights

SI NECESITA LEER ESTO EN ESPAÑOL, BAJE A LA SIGUIENTE SECCIÓN.

ENGLISH

  1. Safety remains first. Do not try to run or argue. Try to remain calm. Any sudden movements can put you in danger. Don’t lie or provide false documentation.

  2. You have the right to remain silent. If you have not violated any law, you do not need to answer any questions about your status. Anything you say can be used against you in court.

  3. You have the right to a lawyer. If you are detained, you have the right to consult a lawyer. The state is not required to prove you with one. Do not sign any papers without a lawyer present since you may be signing away your rights.

  4. You do not need to open your door without a warrant. An official may claim you gave consent to enter even if you slightly open your door. Ask the official to slip the warrant beneath your door. An administrative warrant is not a valid warrant. A valid warrant must be signed by a judge, have an effective date, your correct name, and your correct address.

  5. Officials need your consent to search your vehicle. If stopped on the road, you are required to provide your license, vehicle registration, and insurance. You can decline to provide them with anything else. They may only pull you over and question you if you have violated the law or for reasonable suspicion of a crime. Racial profiling is not a valid reason to pull you over.

ESPAÑOL

  1. La seguridad viene primero. No intente correr o discutir.
